The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) was created in the belief that there is an opportunity to present all of the campus's visitors, students, and collaborators with an incredibly unique environment. Situated in southern Eleuthera, The Bahamas, CSD's remote location has always necessitated a high level of self-sustainability. The community size is ideal for the creation and testing viability of working models, and the vision demands that our community live well in this place. Many of CSD's successes have been centered around environmental management: the campus's water supply is harvested via rainwater, and boasts one of the largest renewable energy systems in the country, the community strives to be a zero waste campus, and CSD manufactures all the campus's biodiesel. Partnered with CSD, Querencia Studio spent a semester working with Island School students to conduct research on how to create new clothing materials from the invasive casuarina plant.
