Home of rising ethical fashion brands
The Canvas was founded in 2018 by Devin Gilmartin and Tegan Maxey with the motivation to provide a space for a community, a “blank canvas” where people and brands unite around ethical fashion. Having originally started a brand called Querencia Studio, their encounters with other small, emerging ethical brands consistently brought to light an insight which led to the founding of The Canvas. Small brands might have the ability to open digital commerce channels through websites. Physical retail is more difficult. The Canvas aims to change that and level the playing field.
Uncommon people with a common sense
Prior to starting The Canvas, Devin had gained experience in the industry, including fast-fashion brand NEXT and multimedia company Milk Studios, and Tegan, having spent several years traveling, had moved to New York to work on finding sustainable alternatives for school uniforms. When introduced in 2016, they saw the potential of their respective backgrounds and how, together, they could make an impactful project.
A few meetings later, the fashion brand Querencia Studio was born with the mission of introducing an alternative option for clothing that did not sacrifice sustainability for aesthetics or vice-versa. Soon they realized that there was a need in the market for a space to bring together unique and ethical brands on a larger scale; thus creating a community truly capable of changing fashion for ever. Two years later their vision of creating a home for all rising ethical fashion brands and building a community around it, came to fruition.
Common places, uncommon spaces
The Canvas took off by transforming vacant spaces into hubs that unite unique brands and curious customers around the common goal of ethical fashion.
We pop in and out of cities for different periods of time. This began within the former Hunter College bookstore in the summer of 2018. We temporarily occupied the space and built it out as a hub for conversation and collaboration. There, we developed partnerships with brands, companies, and people who are making fashion fairer, more accessible and more connected.
In November of 2018, we expanded to a second location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Then we popped up with a store in Antwerp, Belgium for a year from fall 2019. And in October 2020 we opened our next location on Bowery in Manhattan which was formerly the International Center for Photography.
We provide rising ethical fashion brands access to global markets, while bringing people to mindful fashion
We believe the only way this industry can change is if we work together. The goal of The Canvas is to create a place where ideas can be sparked and creativity can flourish, no matter how uncommon. Therefore we transform vacant spaces into hubs that bring unique brands and curious customers together to build a community. We provide rising, ethical brands access to global markets, services and technology while offering a unique mix of globally sourced and ethically created products to consumers – inspiring them to inform themselves about honest fashion practices both in our retail spaces and online.
United brands of ethical fashion
Our priority is to empower the growth of ethical fashion brands by connecting them with opportunities to scale their businesses through a unified brick and mortar sales point, while providing services, tools and analytics to enable innovation and foster growth. We believe the demise of fast fashion will be accelerated through a connected network of sustainability-focused businesses working together to stimulate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Reduce, Reuse, and Retail.
These are the methods that we’ve deemed essential to a responsible environment that promotes considerate purchasing, and a space where buying something new isn’t the only way to contribute.
We encourage our brands and customers to be long-term purchasers and producers, making and buying products designed to last or be reused.
Reuse whenever possible
By participating in clothing swaps, upcycling events, fabric repurposing and more, The Canvas is committed to facilitating closed loop exchanges wherever possible.
We reimagine with an emphasis on responsible supply chain and design. All brands at The Canvas must apply and align with at least two of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our in-house publication brings information, interviews and all you need to know about our partners, events and continued efforts to address the Sustainable Development Goals. We’ll help tell your story through this channel.
The Canvas is the only fashion retailer that offers rising ethical fashion brands access to global markets, and customers a unique mix of globally sourced and ethically created products – online and through repurposed retail locations in the US and Europe.
At its core The Canvas is a global community with the goal of uniting brands and consumers in uncommon ways around the common goal of ethical fashion.
